EXAPUNKS

Another excellent open-ended puzzler from Zachtronics!

EXAPUNKS is an indie simulation game made by Zachtronics. It is the latest open-ended puzzle game from the creators of Opus Magnum, SHENZHEN I/O, TIS-100, and more. The year is 1997. You used to be a hacker, but now you have the phage. You made a deal: one hack, one dose. There’s nothing left to lose… except your life.

EXAPUNKS Review

8.6 Total Score
Superb

EXAPUNKS is a highly polished puzzle game that should be quite fun for anyone interested in programming puzzles. This is most definitely a worthy successor to TIS-100 and ShenZhen I/O! The atmosphere of the game/world/setting is good, even down to the IRC chat in the background reflecting back on what you just did in the previous mission. The game is much more engaging than previous titles like TIS-100 thanks to loads of beautiful retro art and a more fleshed-out narrative. It's a clear success in that regard, EXAPUNKS hits a really good balance. The difficulty curve is friendlier, but the puzzles are still interesting to solve. Optimization is on a completely different page, with many tricks to discover and master. This ensures that more players will be able to enjoy the story and setting to the end, but masters won't be left wanting from a lack of challenge. It is a really good introduction to the genre, one that I recommend to anyone interested in design-based puzzle games.
