Opus Magnum

Design and build machines that carry out alchemical processes.

Opus Magnum is an indie simulation game made by Zachtronics, the creators of SpaceChem, Infinifactory, and SHENZHEN I/O. Hailed as the most promising alchemist of his generation, Anataeus Vaya has just accepted a position as Head Alchemist of House Van Tassen, the oldest and richest of the city’s ancient Houses. But dangers lurk behind the family’s opulent facade, and alchemy alone may not solve every problem. Master the intricate, physical machinery of the transmutation engine— the alchemical engineer’s most advanced tool— and use it to create vital remedies, precious gemstones, deadly weapons, and more.

Opus Magnum Review

9.1 Total Score
Very Good

Opus Magnum is the latest open-ended puzzle game from Zachtronics. It has every bit of the Zachtronics competitive puzzle-optimizing fun we've come to know and love, but the infinite play area means that merely solving a puzzle is always reasonably easy. If you get joy out of optimizing and increasing efficiency for its own sake you'll love this game. There's little else to do, and the game could do more to give you a reason to keep refining your contraptions. But the actual creation of your little machines is sublime and extremely satisfying to watch when it finally works. As with all Zachtronics puzzlers, getting a solution to each puzzle is only the first step. The real fun begins when you try and optimise your solution. Each solution is scored on three key metrics. Cost, Time to Run, and Area. If you loved Space Chem and Infinifactory, then you WILL love this game.
